Postpartum in the US vs. Europe

Postpartum recovery in the US is typically 6-8 weeks after giving birth or 8-12 weeks after having a c section. However during these check ups, it’s usually an exam, discuss your mental health (sometimes), and give you guidance on when you can have sex or steps for birth control.

There is no check for diastasis recti, pelvic floor issues, body alignment, or follow up appointments after your initial postpartum check up. They do not teach you how to massage your scar from your c section to minimize scar tissue. They do not tell you to be cautious while working out, you are fully cleared to go 6-8 weeks. It is imperative to have more resources and guidance for Mothers.

Did you know that in other countries such as France, they offer in-home postpartum care and all mothers receive pelvic floor therapy. In Sweden, midwives conduct as many home visits as needed as well as breastfeeding counseling. In the Netherlands, new mothers have a maternity nurse to provide a minimum of 24 hours of care within the first 8 days after discharge.*

Your body goes through so much change and work during the 9 months of pregnancy, to have one check up that isn't really a thorough review of your body is not enough after giving birth. Women need more attention and love to their body more than ever, especially after giving birth. We are expected to take care of our babies, but how can we do it to our best when our body is not always healed properly. Postpartum care is essential and crucial for mothers to be the best version of themselves and to be a  mom.
